Mrs. Feeny and the Grubby Garden Gang

by Sandy Baker. Illustrated by Jim DeWitt

This brightly colored, fun tale introduces kids to the ideas and concepts of healthy and environmentally friendly gardening. From the moment Mrs. Feeny sees the neighborhood 8- and 9-year olds cutting across her yard, she tries to figure out how to stop them. Although she tries everything to maintain a perfect lawn, including running the sprinkler way too long, the ornery kids continue to walk and ride their bikes across it.

At its start, this compelling story seems to pit the young against the old: how does “meany Mrs. Feeny” solve the destroyed lawn and kid issues? By its end, however, everyone wants to be involved in creating and improving the new garden, and eating its rewards. Lovers of gardening will enjoy reading this book together with their children. And children may be encouraged to reexamine their perceptions.

Appropriate for children from Kindergarten to Grade 4. The author's website has kids’ gardening crossword puzzles and solutions.
